Denbej is a Kurdish style of singing that dates back to pre-Islamic times. For generations, many would gather around a master Dengbej storyteller and listen to the woes and joys of life until sunrise. However, the 1980 Turkish military coup almost wiped out the tradition. The government’s attempts to criminalise the Kurdish language silenced the songs. Here is the story of a man, who despite all the odds hid Dengbej cassettes to preserve a forbidden history.
